Stay Away from One-Legged Programs
Definitely stay away from software written and sold by the same person. Programmers so far in this industry have demonstrated a distinct lack of business knowledge and Internet marketing skills to survive. They are one-man operations and if that one person dies, becomes disabled or goes broke (which he likely will as professional competitors come into play), your software will end up worthless and you'll have to purchase again. Stay Away from Shysters
Stay away from jerks who won't tell you the truth and the whole truth up front. Example: Brian Wilson of conpro tucks away a little provision in his software license (where it's sure not to be found) that states that his sofware can't be resold unless it is being purchased with the store and (get this) the new owner must use the exact same business name at the exact same location with the same address, same phone number - you get 'Brian's drift', eh? It's the kind of thing you expect from these one-legged flimflam guys.
Finding Good Consignment Business Software is Easy
After all is said and done, there's one consignment software company that has been in business for 6 years. The owner is not the programmer and there's a separate person handling support and customer accounts. The company has solid financial backing and if the programmer meets his demise or gets canned, there'll be another programmer. If the owner disappears, the company will go on.
